Sometimes, I imagine myself in front of Keith’s class again. And some boy asks if I ever shot anyone. It’s always the boys who ask that question, and it’s always the precursor to what they really want to know. Not did you shoot at someone, but did you kill someone? Did you take a life?

I don’t know if I could do that again, talk to the kids, I mean.

Maybe you could tell them that its not worth it, war, I mean, in most cases its unessesary and just not worth it. Theres got to be other ways to solve problems. Sure its OK to defend yourself but this? This is different. But all wars are similar in one respect: those who decide to fight are not the ones who are sent to fight. I bet you could talk to kids maybe what you say would be different. If you dont talk about it then who will diswade them from starting their own war when their time comes?

It is a shame that the fighters are never the same hawks spoiling for a fight. It is easy to make war from your desk in your warm office, a bit harder on the ground in Baghdad.
