Bronze Star?
Mark was put in for a bronze star, but the nomination was down-graded (see: "The Blue Car" in the September postings for a part of the story). Each service has their own medals, plus a separate series for the Department of Defense as a whole. You only qualify for whatever your service offers, or for the DoD series if you are in a joint billet (like the AF working with the Army). Mark is in a joint billet, and while the Army and Air Force both have Bronze Stars, there is no DoD Bronze Star.
"Oh well - save it for the Infantry" as Mark says.

Oh, there's a lot more to it than that. Politics, local policies, various interpreations of the regs, certain commanders not believing that HQ troops should recieve the Bronze Star... in the end what does it matter? It just pisses me off though that I have seen Army Colonels who have done a lot less walk away from here with the Bronze Star just (apparenly) because they are full birds. But there's a lot more important things to worry about.
You know, not qualifying for a BS is okay. It's just that the criteria used to actually determine who does rate one should be applied equally across the board.
I guess it does burn me up, or I wouldn't have bothered to write two comments on it.
All of this BS stuff is plain BS.
I guess you have to not think about it. You have done your part and unfortunately it is in the hands of others.
BULLSHIT.
Mark has EARNED his Bronze Star, Mark should get his Bronze Star.
I'm sorry, but for all the farookin crap he and his family have gone through, he deserves that Bronze Star... and if he doesn't want it, he can turn it over with a citation to his family.
Medals may seem superfluous now, but in the long run, they speak volumes.
Just trust me.
Love to you, Mark, AL, Kraig and Senior B's. This time is almost over.
Family time will resume, once again...
Love.
